Root Canals with Design A Smile

First, let's address a common misconception: root canal therapy does not cause pain. In fact, it can be one of the most effective ways to alleviate it. Inside a healthy tooth, there is a pulp chamber with nerves and blood vessels which branches into canals along the root. This is what allows teeth to be responsive to thermal and tactile stimuli such as heat, cold, chewing, touching, etc. Tooth decay and damage can cause an inflammation and infection to these roots. Root canal treatment is effective for solving this issue. Occasionally there damage to the root is too extensive, in which case removing the tooth and filling its place with a bridge or implant is the best option.

If the damage to a tooth results in an acute inflammation or infection of the pulp, pressure inside the pulp chamber can build up and possibly cause swelling that has no way to release. The tooth will experience extreme pressure and pain, and the pulp suffers irreversible damage. If left untreated, an acute infection can spread into the surrounding tissue and become a chronic situation that ranges from mild to severe. To treat a root canal damaged tooth, the doctor administers a local anesthetic injection to sufficiently numb the tooth and its surrounding bone and gums. Then, the diseased and dead pulp tissue will be removed from the tooth until the entire pulp chamber and its roots are all clean. Once this is done, the tooth will no longer be causing you pain. The canals are then disinfected with antibacterial solutions and are filled with a rubber-like material and sealed, and the crown may be rebuilt and prepped to receive a porcelain crown to protect the tooth from recontamination and future damage.

If you're experiencing an excessive amount of pain from a particular tooth or teeth, then root canal treatment might be right for you. For more information, contact us today to set up an appointment.
